More geek stuff

Technophobes can shut their eyes now ...

I can't work out how to solve the post feed issue. Blogger has removed the handy "recent posts" tag in what is now, predictably enough, called "Classic Blogger". Instead, Beta uses atom feeds, which refresh the list every time I publish the damn thing, instead of ranking it by date. This is why miscellaneous posts keep popping out of the archives.

It is more generally annoying, because I do a fair bit of finicky rewriting, even after I've posted something (not just fixing typos, though that's common enough - ahem - alas, I am my own sub...) If I'm not to drive subscribers mad with out-of-date posts, I'm going to have to find a workaround. Even the experts seem to be stumped on this one - Feedburner simply says to stop updating old posts. As I've had to go through practically every post to get the Read More link working, this is no good to me. Even adding labels buggers it up. Humph.

Anyway, the bulk of the slog is done now, and things should begin to be merely chronological soon.

Also, I had a look at my Blogger feed. What a mess... I recommend the Feedburner feed, which will take out that unsightly html. Link on the sidebar or here.

Is it just me?..I can't seem to get any article but this one. Maybe just a temp glitch will stoll by later.

I hope it's just you - and temporary - I've checked the page out on Firefox and Safari (mac) but no PC views, including IE. IE mac has been hopeless for months, it always scrambled this blog.

Do let me know of any continuing problems. Beta is completely different, so there will be bugs that can - I hope - be ironed out.

in the longer term I think Blogger will absolutely have to do something about this, because it's a real problem. But meanwhile I'm enjoying getting samples from your archives delivered via RSS.

Still having huge problems with this new format. The home page only lists the most recently published article plus the heading of the one before. There is nothing on the right hand side. If I use the archive for December I'm brought back to the home page with the same problem. Also I noted that you had placed one of my comments in this post but it hasn't turned up yet...is it IE, is it me, is it perhaps Andrew Bolt?

TQ, I'm really puzzled - those are very odd glitches - and will do my best to fix it up - certainly I don't want to lose you as a reader and commenter here! - or any other IE users. I will investigate on a PC myself and see what is going wrong. I know that IE notoriously causes problems for the blogger format (I gave up entirely on IE for mac, which microsoft in any case no longer supports at all, and don't recommend it - though it stuffs up so many pages that I can't imagine many people use it any more).

In the meantime, the only suggestion I have is that you check whether you have the latest version of IE. These pages use recently developed coding, and perhaps your browser doesn't understand it. Or you could download Firefox, which does, I'm told, parse it perfectly well on PCs. I know it's a pain, but Firefox is a much better browser anyway and it's easy to import all your bookmarks and preferences.

Btw, I just put your comment in the middle of mine...but I'm sure Bolt is to blame for everything else...

Hi all,

from my perspective, PC running Firefox, it works fine.

Right. I've tracked down that there are real problems with IE6 on PC (basically what TQ identified...) This is no good at all. I know that IE 6 is a very popular browser.

This despite there being IE fixes in all the coding - they're not working.

I'm heading off for expert advice. Please bear with me, TQ and any others who are experiencing problems...I do want you to experience the wonderful new layout...! And many many apologies for the incovenience.

Hi TQ and any others having problems -

working blind here. But I am seeking advice from someone with both a PC and web knowledge...in the meantime, is it viewable now? I've tried making the page wider. Those with small screens will miss the nice grey framing, but it should still be usable...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: %$#&*^%! Microsoft...

Still the same problem...but not to worry my curiosity is greater than my impatience...happy hunting

Actually as this is the only place on the blog where I can enjoy the sound of my own voice (or fingers?) I have to say that as fraustrating as Microsoft is made out to be its pretty silly of a new blogger 'skin' not to adequately to take into account the major browser out there.

I'd happily change browsers but my modem connection speed is just a tad faster than carrier pigeon.

Web developers hate Microsoft because they established IE as the dominant browser and then don't bother to make it compatible with the standard stuff other browsers deal with. It's the one that you're always having to work around and it has hissy fits for the most unpredictable reasons. As I said, the mac version is now unusable: once mac made Safari, ms figured it wasn't worth working on and just abandoned it.

TQ, or anyone else with IE: if you can send in reports on whether my latest brainwave worked, I'd be appreciate.

Also: I'm told that while the front page doesn't work, individual posts do. Is that the case with yours? And if you scroll way way own the bottom, do you find collapsed sidebars lying down there in shame?

hi alison,

site seems fine to me on IE6, SP2 (not my usual browser, but thought I'd check it). the column widths seem slightly better on Firefox, but its completely functional on IE6 as far as I can tell.

Thanks David. That's two good reports...I even checked on IE5 for mac, and the blog now works better on that than it has for about a year (it's been indecipherable). Except that the labels don't appear at all. I can live with that, but hope the pretty label cloud works on IE6...fingers crossed now for TQ.

Also going to change settings slightly so the front page ain't so heavy for dail-up users...

Whacko, its all there, its all working, exile is over. Thanks Alison.

Whacko indeed! So glad it's working. And thanks too everyone for the feedback - it's been very helpful indeed. Without a PC it's, well, impossible to see it your end...
