Great article, Alison.
Brisbane also has The Escapists, who create highly imaginative and theatrical shows. Their production "boy girl wall" sold out at Metro Arts last year and will appear on the mainstage at both La Boite and Hothouse Theatre in 2011.
I just found your blog, and it's amazing. I guess I'll spend some good moments reading here :)
Interesting piece. But I've got to say, the Melbourne selections could have been a little more imaginative. I mean, Black Lung, Hayloft Project, My Darling Patricia... You've profiled the Malthouse company-in-residence program. What about Suitcase Royale? Sisters Grimm? Four Larks? To my mind these companies are just as interesting, if less recognised.
Thanks for the bouquets. Keep those suggestions coming! As for the brickbats -
Isn't My Darling Patricia Sydney-based? I certainly assumed it is. Otherwise, I picked the companies I thought most influential over the past few years, while being very conscious - as I emphasised - that there are many other exciting companies (as you'd know if you read this blog, I have written about all those others you mention, and often at length). Something to consider before you get all snitchy: I was following these companies well BEFORE they were picked up by the Malthouse.
