I wonder if anyone did see both? Fwiw, I liked the performances I saw, which seemed real and invested. Finding sympathetic venues is a real challenge for a touring show.Alison Croggonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08398213223487458758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202906.post-83946792203000488752012-03-02T11:23:08.737+11:002012-03-02T11:23:08.737+11:00A friend of mine, whose taste is usually fairly in...A friend of mine, whose taste is usually fairly in line with mine, saw Beautiful Burnout in Perth and loved it as well. I, however, saw it in Sydney and was pretty underwhelmed overall. I agree that the venue probably had a lot to do with it. The Seymour's York Theatre is a cavernous energy-sucking sort of a space. There were a lot of empty seats the night I saw it, too, which alwaysTom Conroynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202906.post-62631550217446694992012-02-29T15:46:00.692+11:002012-02-29T15:46:00.692+11:00Maybe read a little more of "this site",...Maybe read a little more of "this site", Anon. You might stumble across the negative review of Propeller's The Winter's Tale, which seemed to cause so much angst.

What do you mean by "objective criticism"? Is there such a thing? Or is a review only "objective" if it's negative?

That aside, you have a point, in that I have totally Alison Croggonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08398213223487458758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202906.post-29448166855680432632012-02-29T13:47:57.359+11:002012-02-29T13:47:57.359+11:00This site reads like someone co-opted by a Festiva...This site reads like someone co-opted by a Festival to write positive reviews of every show, no matter their worthiness. I'd be curious as to the exchange of goods, services, freebies, etc being given. So much depends on the spatial relationship with the audience.

And yes, innovation is one of those buzz words... It describes an important quality, without which the culture would be stale; but sometimes it's just about novelty.Alison Croggonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08398213223487458758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202906.post-53785095281215105552012-02-29T00:51:04.166+11:002012-02-29T00:51:04.166+11:00Great review of Beautiful Burnout. Perhaps venue is a factor.

As for 'innovation' ... it's overrated: our society is saturated with it, why should our theatre be?
